How much does central air conditioning cost in Toronto?

A central AC replacement runs $3,500–$7,500 installed. Ductless single-zone is $3,200–$5,000. Price depends on efficiency, tonnage, and ductwork needs.

What SEER rating should I get for a Toronto home?

16–18 SEER2 is the sweet spot for Ontario. Higher SEER costs more upfront with a longer payback since Toronto's cooling season is shorter than in warmer climates.

How long does AC installation take?

A central AC replacement on an existing forced-air system takes 4–6 hours. A new installation may take a full day.

When is the best time to replace my AC?

Spring (April–May) before the summer rush is ideal, better availability, faster booking, and no pressure from a heat wave.

Warning Signs

Signs Your AC Needs Replacing This Summer

Don't wait for a breakdown on the hottest day of the year. These warning signs mean your AC is living on borrowed time.

AC unit is 12+ years old, average lifespan in Toronto is 12–15 years
House takes 3+ hours to reach set temperature on a 30°C day
Uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out in Canada), parts are scarce and expensive
Electricity bills have increased significantly without a change in usage patterns
Had a refrigerant leak repaired, recharging an aging system is a short-term fix
Loud grinding, squealing, or banging noises when running

FAQ

Common AC Questions

A central AC replacement on an existing forced-air system runs $3,500–$7,500 installed. Ductless single-zone is $3,200–$5,000. We provide a fixed-price written quote before starting anything.

For Toronto's climate, 16–18 SEER2 is the sweet spot. Higher efficiency (20+ SEER2) is available but the payback period is long because our cooling season is shorter than in warmer climates. Mid-range efficiency usually gives the best return on investment for GTA homes.

Spring (April–May) before the summer rush. You'll get faster booking, better equipment availability, and more time to choose the right system. If your AC fails mid-summer, we respond quickly, but spring is always better.

A central AC replacement on existing equipment takes 4–6 hours in one day. A new install without existing linesets or electrical takes a full day. We give you a realistic time estimate when we quote.

For most GTA homeowners, 16–18 SEER2 hits the sweet spot. The Ontario cooling season runs roughly June through August, shorter than warmer climates, so the payback period on ultra-premium 20+ SEER2 units is longer here. That said, if you're running AC heavily or staying 15+ years, the premium units do pay back. We run the numbers for you during your quote.

Yes. Refrigerant work requires a licensed refrigeration mechanic. An electrical permit is also required for the disconnect and wiring. We handle all permits and inspections, it's part of the job, not an add-on cost. Never let a contractor skip permits on refrigeration work.

Usually yes. We check duct static pressure and sizing during the quote visit. Undersized ducts reduce AC efficiency significantly, but most homes in Thornhill and the GTA that had central AC before have adequate ductwork. We flag any issues before work starts.

Spring (April–May) is ideal, availability is better, lead times are shorter, and pricing tends to be more competitive before the summer rush. Fall is second best. Avoid July and August if you can; demand peaks and booking windows extend to 2–3 weeks. If your AC fails in peak summer, we still offer same-day emergency replacement.
