Most common cause is a failed ignitor or dirty flame sensor — both inexpensive fixes. Could also be a gas valve fault or a lockout condition from overheating. We diagnose the exact cause on the first visit and carry parts for most major brands on the van.

A loud bang on startup is called delayed ignition — gas builds up before igniting. It's hard on the furnace and can indicate a dirty burner or gas pressure issue. Stop using the furnace and call us — running it in this condition accelerates damage and can be a safety risk.

A yellow or flickering flame instead of solid blue means incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. This is a safety issue — call us immediately or call Enbridge if you smell gas or suspect CO. Do not run the furnace until it has been inspected.

If the furnace is under 15 years old and the repair is under $800, repair usually wins. Over 15 years old, or repair exceeds $1,500, replacement is often the better long-term decision. A cracked heat exchanger always means replace — it's a carbon monoxide risk and cannot be safely repaired.
