Air Handler Installation & Replacement

The air handler is the indoor half of your split system. Coil sizing, condensate drainage, and airflow all need to be right. We've installed hundreds across the GTA — attic, closet, and basement.

Configurations We Install in GTA Homes

The right configuration depends on your space, how the ductwork connects, and whether you're pairing with a heat pump or AC.

Vertical / Upflow

The most common configuration in GTA homes. Stands upright in a utility closet or mechanical room. Return air enters from the bottom, supply exits to the plenum above. Well-suited for basement and closet installs.

Horizontal (Attic)

Air handler lies on its side. Common when mechanical equipment goes in the attic. Requires a secondary drain pan with overflow float switch and proper condensate routing. We've done many attic installs correctly.

Heat Pump Fan Coil

Paired with a heat pump outdoor unit. Includes electric backup heat strips for very cold days when the heat pump needs supplemental heating. Must be sized to match the outdoor unit's capacity.

Air Handler Questions

A furnace burns natural gas to generate heat — it has a gas valve, heat exchanger, and flue. An air handler has a blower and evaporator coil but no gas burner. It heats electrically (with heat strips or a heat pump) and is used in all-electric homes or homes with heat pumps. Both move conditioned air through your ducts.
A typical air handler replacement runs $2,500–$6,000 installed, depending on unit size (1.5–5 ton), orientation (horizontal attic installs are more labor-intensive), and whether refrigerant line work is included. We provide detailed written quotes after assessing your setup.
If the air handler is more than 10 years old, replacing both together usually makes sense. Mismatched systems can reduce efficiency by 10–15% and may void manufacturer warranties. We'll honestly assess your existing air handler — sometimes a coil-only swap is enough, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
Yes — it's common in Toronto homes with limited mechanical room space. Proper attic installs require a drain pan with float switch (to shut off the unit if primary drainage fails), insulated refrigerant lines, and good service access. We've done many attic installs and know what needs to be done to get it right.

Yes. We work with all major manufacturers and confirm the indoor coil matches the outdoor unit's AHRI rating — the right match matters for rated efficiency and warranty compliance. We'll tell you exactly what's compatible before you commit to any equipment.
A straightforward air handler replacement in an accessible basement or utility room takes 4–6 hours. Attic or crawlspace installs are more involved — typically 6–10 hours depending on access and any duct modifications needed. We complete the full job in one visit whenever possible.
